Junior reporter with the Evening Argus in Sussex

Post Second World War:
Joint editor of the Oxford University Student Magazine, The Isis.

Up to 1955:
Worked for the Daily Mail as a sub-editor

1955 - 1967:
Various posts including editor of the African Mail and the Times of Zambia

1968 -1986:
Observer colour magazine editor

Observer Foreign and Commonwealth editor

Financial Times Diary writer

1986 - 1997:
Founder and editor of Africa Analysis, current affairs newsletter.
